Issue #6
12/19-12/28
The sky is grey, the streets are emptying, the Christmas tree on top of the Capitol Records building is twinkling ominously in the distance. I’ve already had a million conversation about how staying in LA is far superior to leaving, which I don’t mind, because it is. While most of these events are today through Friday, I am also including an event later next week because I do not trust myself to write this substack when I am in holiday mode.

Sketch Club at UCB Franklin
Tuesday, Dec 19 at 10pm
Sketch Club, one of the most beloved and reliable indie sketch shows in town, is having its final iteration tonight with some verifiably good teams like The Audacity, Dick Cannon, and Sorry Sarah. Sketch is a beautiful, if underappreciated, art. Hard to produce, it is high-risk, high-reward, but know that you will be in very capable hands at this star-studded show.
Bad Netflix Movie Live! at Lyric Hyperion
Friday, Dec 22 at 9:30 PM
This Friday Bad Netflix Movie Live is back with an all-new script. We’ll be reading Home Away from Home for the Holidays for the first time, live on stage. Shakira Ja’nai Paye and Lauren Holt star in a script about two women who swap houses during the holiday season, that classic trope we all know and love. The script was written exquisite-corpse style1 by some amazing writers including Christine Medrano, Laurie Magers, Garrick Bernard, and Derek & Dril. At the last one I laughed so hard I was crying and snotting everywhere. It will happen again!
Santa Claus’ Next Top Holiday Mascot at UCB
Friday, Dec 22 at 7:00 PM
Blake Wilding is hosting an America’s Next Top Model-style show for a new Christmas mascot because when the Christmas season comes it’s time to get creative. I trust everyone involved in this show to go absolutely insane with an already insane premise, which is exactly what a holiday show needs.
Fifty Worst Jokes at The Lyric Hyperion
Thursday, Dec 28 at 7:30 PM
Nothing is funnier than things that are not funny, which is why I must recommend Fifty Worst Jokes at the Lyric. One of the few stand-up comedy shows that also promises a dance party afterwards.
Shorts
The submission window for Silverlake Shorts is open - if you have a short you’ve been sitting on and want to show it in front of a sold-out crowd, this is your chance to submit!
Music
I first heard Fleece Kawasaki on the metro with his band, Fleece Jones, back in 2018 or so, and have been following him ever since. Maybe it’s the years of busking, of playing on hostile trains and in bustling outdoor centers, but his voice is immediately captivating, his songs plaintive and engaging, creating an effect that makes you stop everything to listen. He’s putting together his debut album and is raising money for it here.
Minaret Winter Jazz Festival at The Lodge Room
Thursday, Dec 21 at 6:00 PM
I posted about Minaret Records last week, a jazz record label that is doing their best to promote jazz and a community around LA, and this week they’re having a festival at the Lodge Room with several acts and DJs. I will probably not always promote this much jazz but it definitely seems like the season for it - slightly gray, moody, overcast. Perfect time of year to show up to a concert early in the evening, sip on a whiskey, mulled wine, or a martini, and enjoy some well-curated jazz.
Have a wonderful holiday week to all the Slow Days subscribers out there. Thanks for reading! <3
